Mountain Ortigara

Battalion Alpine Seven Communes

Times 13.

"And' dead Silvagni. You/he/she had come 16. A 75 without exploding the head have brought away him while he/she was chatting and it lit up the cigarette. And' remained an upright instant, without head, with the cut-off neck, transformed in a jet of blood and with the match turned on in hand.... "

... " They have been stricken the 94 kitchens exempts. Eradicated boys, you dig. There is here a foot. There could be... the man, and you/he/she can be alive. God as this is tanned. Does it breathe? You, but for little. Chaplain touches to you... " Eccone another, already dead. Here the third one. And' fainted? And' dead. It didn't have anybody wound. You/he/she had been hurled from the move of air produced by the distant burst about fifty meters.

June 20 th 1917

The horizon was in flames. From the Zebio to Top Caldiera, all the crests burn. From the Colombara to the Ortigara it is a whole blaze. I have the impression that the circle of fire tightens him, I/you/he/she wind us, there annieti. The wounded come so exhausted and petrified as you/they had assisted to a show of superhuman slaughter.

From the roccionis of the Campanaro the men come down with the ropes to clusters. Someone races on the eyelash, someone in the run falls down and he smashes. God! a 305 in full on the place of medication of the Battalion Bassano. The smoke disappears and is not perceived that a great crater. Poor Congin. You/he/she had had the change and he/she didn't want to leave his Alpine until after the action....

You passes the assistant. And' an appalling vision. Earth is ploughed, raked up, perforated by bullets of all the calibers and every furrow it has its human sementa, every furrow has been watered, and abundantly, of blood. I had tried to come to bury so many miserable and dear leftovers, but you/he/she has been impossible.... "

Dark is dense... it Needs to feel the ground with the alpenstok, then with the foot.... A jump. Where fallen will be. Something tender under the feet. A corpse...

"... On the Pasubio. On a long level and stony line around 200 meters and breadth 80. ... There in the autumn of 1916, blood flowed on the rocks, there they lay to heaps the dead bodies: of friends and enemies. This plain rocky has perhaps been, the most incandescent point in the hell of the first World war. To that time, on that minuscule edge of earth, 200 guns and lanciabobme they assembled for days and weeks theirs diabolic positions. ... It was also a millstone that swallowed men, in which a company after the other one was lacerated and grinded, both to conquer the plain one, both to maintain the occupation... "

"You remembers that for the possession of the Pasubio the decisive fights developed him on a wide space as soon as 80 meters and that on it, in a struggle lasted day and night from 9 to October 19 were employed, from a part to the other, fighters' hundreds statements to an awful fire of guns and bombards. ... The Pasubio remains for the Kaiserjagers and for the Alpine ones the monument of an unheard of sacrifice and an imperishable glory."

""... Dissimulated all as him it was able among the rocks, in the brief basins, immovable for times and times in niches dug with the favor of the night because the extended body could stick anymore to the earth and to escape the hedgetop stroke. A lot of of these niches the hostile hit turned into coffins.

Our corpses of the day from now on and the most serious wounded that had not been able or wanted to detach himself/herself/themselves from the tallest rocks of the tragic cone of the quota, rolled with the new wounded and with the new corpses, frammisti with the stones and with the materials of every kind flowed in the night toward the extreme point... "In the cold winter... sometimes someone in to doze, in to watch over, it feels that a limb hung him as extraneous appendix; it has bother deaf of it; looking, he/she sees him/it whitish or livid; then it is had to race coll'unguento and to rub the frozen one, that doesn't lose a part of if. Pasubio

"The snow to the two thousand meters high with a cold of 20 - 25 degrees under him zero (once it arrived to - 29°) it is not light and wide as to the low quotas or in the plans; neither it is piled up with that soft cohesion that all know. It falls to dwarfish crystals, stellette, hard, hard, that crowd as the sand without melting himself/herself/themselves in an alone layer. When it blows the wind, these crystals whirl as the dust cloud in summer in the lowland. If the wind howls with violence, then the snowstorm purchases the same proportions of a storm of sand in the desert. It lifts even mountains of snow, it moves her, it changes her and it falls down her from the gullies, covering paths and camminamenti, burying trenches and refuges... "

Dead, wherever dead: on the road, that all horribly stamp on soft; for the gullies buried seeds from the deposits that they fall; under the rocks; and someone, killed on the quota, as soon as the to climb and to go down some people percotendolo and pushing does him/it him to lower; one, abandoned to the head of a gully, it was two days later swollen... Reading one of the so many texts of the different necklaces, and in the different close examinations, it now comes me to the mind writing, a fact that underlines once more how much huge it was the tragedy consumed him in this terrible war.

June of 1916. The water bottles were by now empty. The last ones you sip and then the end of the water and the beginning of the thirst. Not a fountain in it rates her in which he was. Innumerable the marches and the moves under the sun and the heat. The uniform, the backpack, the rifle, the equipment, the slopes made still more fatiguing. And the sun dried the lips. After times and times and days, the thirst you/he/she was felt more and more among the Battalion. Going down in the vallone of Foppiano there would have been a fountain of water. The alpine Joseph V. not resistette and despite the friend Silvio R. dissuaded him/it of recarvisi, him equally he/she didn't listen but the alone his/her desire to drink. He/she didn't want to feel reasons and even the sight of the dead bodies swollen under the sun that you/they lay next to that testimony source of the danger and the death that was in trap stopped him/it and did him/it desist. That alpine made return to his/her company wounded seriously from an Austrian sniper that on purpose waited for, aware of the importance that that source covered for the thirsty ones, attended patient as a spider in its cobweb the prey. His/her hit also not immediately deadly, he/she left equally the sign. Departed of the time before of his/her fellow soldiers succeeded to on all four to get away from the other dead bodies to bring him/it to the place of medication, where unfortunately it died in three days of agonies. That present fountain still in the vallone, the fountain of the death was denominated.
